Observation details
Flagged rare. County-first record, I believe. Found in Fairfield County yesterday by Rodney McCollum. Present today at the Yacht Club boat docks here in Licking County. I noted the smaller, rounder head compared to Herring and especially the mostly-white wingtips. Many photos were taken. For my own memories: As I was walking from the Licking County spillway, I could see all of the gulls at the Yacht Club lifting and circling high into the air. Being about 1/4 of a mile away, I quickly scoped them and noticed a gull that was pretty bright in comparison to the others and noted especially the white wingtips. I fired off a few distant photos in case the birds never landed again and flew off. The first photo comes from that moment. I quickly raced down the path to the docks and was relieved to see they had settled back down. I located the Iceland Gull out on the water and got many photos, including open-winged shots. Over the next hour or so, it went to the docks and back to the water a few times. All of the gulls lifted twice more while I was there, but settled back in each time. Usually, they do this due to a flyover eagle, but none were present today. The final image is a really neat comparison between Lesser Black-backed, Iceland, and Herring Gulls.
