Observation details
An iconic bird of wild wooded lakes in the Canadian north, I was pleased to hear a couple of Common Loons calling back and forth at Johnson's Pier this morning. One came quite close and I shot this short video with sound. They are winter visitors here in California from breeding grounds in the far north. This call is called the "tremolo." Other calls include the "yodel," the "wail," and the "hoot." They are usually silent here but during the breeding season they often haunt the night with their evocative vocals.
