Observation details
This was originally entered as a tentative Gray-collared Becard, as the vocalization we were hearing sounded like nothing we were familiar with; we ruled out Carolina Wren due to the more "wooden" quality (in person, anyway). I sent the attached recordings to a friend who knows the bird in the hope that he could confirm/blast out of the water the ID, but it didn't sound like the GCBE vocalizations that he was familiar with. The file with no number has the bird calling several times, and the recording was amplified and filtered with a high-pass filter. #2 is a separate recording where the bird only called once, so I copied that sample and pasted it three other times within the recording, again amplified and filtered. #3 is that same recording file, only without the high-pass filter and amplified only once, and only including the one call the bird made that time. At first I thought it might have been a wonky Western Tanager (as we DID have one hanging around), but as I got a clearer “listen” I could tell it was a definite two-noted “too-TEET”, almost reminding me of the tail end of the becard’s “maw-WHINNY” song.
