Observation details
smaller than nearby Common Loon; thin, upturned bill; paler gray mantle, thin neck with white throat and upper breast; see photos. The bird was initially found around 0800h approx. 150 yds. offshore. It gradually swam north and west to a distance of approx. 500 m offshore before it took off to the north at 0842h. It climbed to an altitude of approx. 150 ft. before heading due east (inland) and out of sight.
