Observation details
Sighted target bird after 1 hour. One female observed close to the shoreline. Range 25 meters. Dark snipe with obvious 'v' of white that started on the chest between the legs, then went around towards the back of neck, where it changed direction to run down each side of the spine - narrowing and tapering to nothing before reaching the tail. White belly, white eye-ring - with a broader white streak behind the eye and a creamy stripe down the centre of its head between the eyes. Rusty colour seen behind the head in certain light. Photos and video taken (LOTS!). Totally unlike Latham's Snipes - this Australian Painted-snipe did not flush - it seemed content to stay and go about it's day. We sat and watched it for 30 minutes while it fed, then rested, fed then rested, fed then rested - with the occasional bobbing of the tail thrown in. The bird only became alert and stood from it's resting spot to watch us leave. The bird wasn't even startled by an electric boat that glided past in close proximity - with 3 people chatting loudly inside it. We thought it would take flight, but it just kept still, and remained resting among the foliage.
