Observation details
Yellow-breasted Chat was a longtime nemesis bird. This individual was initially reported by Miles Brengle 3 days ago on the 21st and not seen since. Jenny and I identified the most likely thicket near Baker’s Pasture, which was the viney tangle inside the triangle formed by the roads at the south side of the field (the field with paths leading to the beach). After maybe 30 minutes of searching and occasionally playing Chat calls, I caught a quick gimps of the bird before it disappeared again. At least 20 minutes later, and happy with my brief sighting, I was content to move on, but then Jenny (from the other side of the thicket) pointed out that the Chat was up in a tree directly above me. I had about 15 seconds to focus through the vines before it flew down into the tangle and wasn’t seen again. One of my favorite bird encounters of the year!
