Observation details
Compared to the larger Uniform Swiftlet, these were more common and usually flew much lower with a more erratic bat-like flight style. Sometimes they flew right past my head forcing me to duck. These photos show the white spots on the inner webs of the rectrices. Subspecies may be divided into two groups. Those usually lacking white tail spots west of Wallace's Line and those usually with tail spots to the East. Some authors (IOC, Rheindt et al.) split the plain tailed group into several full species. However more recent (2020) work by Davies et al. calls these splits into question. Either way birds here on Buano Island are nominate "C. e. esculenta" which has a bluish gloss to its back.
