Observation details
Continuing; unmistakable; pics. The body and crown often described as slate-black based on museum specimens, but it looks slate-blue in life. Apparently the bluish "bloom" disappears after death. A restricted range species, they breed locally only in tropical wetlands of northern Australia and Wallacea. A rarity here in Ambon, this individual was present for at least a week. This is an adult. Immatures are similar but have the head almost entirely white. Some authors place this bird in the genus "Ardea." It sometimes goes by the English name "Pied Egret."
