Observation details
Landed on presumed Vega after a long chat with Nick Mrvelj. Dark mantled (in line with the dark end of California or an average Western gull) and pale-eyed gull with a pronounced tertial crescent and secondary skirt, streaking limited to the hind neck, bright pink legs, relatively parallel-edged yellow bill and smallish bill with red in the gonys, long-winged and relatively lean in proportions. Structure and mantle color do not suggest Slaty-backed. Thayer's should show more diffuse streaking, a lighter mantle, and paler undersides to primaries. Vega seems to be the only other relatively probably alternative, barring an appledore (lbbg x herg) which would be much less likely. Flew south with all other gulls around 3:18pm due to an unobserved disturbance. Could not get a good open-wing shot. All images digiscoped.
