Observation details
We assisted in the rescue of this bird. It had become tangled in fishing line in a tree by lake 7. A fisherman noticed it and climbed the tree to try to free it. When we arrived he had just reached it, but could only cut the line allowing the bird to fall to the water. Luckily it was able to paddle to shore where we were able to scoop it up and free it from the monofilament that was tightly wrapped around its wing. Once all the line was removed, we were able to determine that the tangled wing was not seriously injured, just an abrasion could be seen. When we released it, it flew about 50 feet along the surface of the water and swooped up into a willow to preen.
