Observation details
Continuing. Following last night's hard freeze, the pond was completely frozen (almost 1/8") and the water between the county road and the bike path was mostly frozen. This limited the bird's access to aquatic vegetation and pulling anything else from the water. It took advantage of the ice and walked quickly or 'skated' along the shore. Those huge feet offer excellent support on ice. Yesterday's fish head was now frozen fish which it couldn't deal with but it took a few wild grapes. It will likely not move around much today, conserving energy. Up to the time we left, attempts being made by others to catch the bird for transport to a rehabilitation centre had failed. The bird still acts quite normal and will fly when approached too closely. When we were leaving it flew south of the path into heavy cattails and was not refound.
