Observation details
Edit: Moving from passerine sp to CORE. Call struck me as odd and flew high above me. I could only gather that it was a small passerine with my naked eye with the fog and low cloud ceiling. I checked a lot of the alders around the property during my time here and could not refind. The vocalization is not one I've heard before and I have also never heard a CORE in real life (although had studied recordings online before). In my mind the main possibilities are other finches such as PISI, LEGO, and HOFI. Open to other considerations, but CORE was my gut reaction upon hearing. Listening to the below species nearly daily at my home also gives me confidence in ruling them out. I did a little bit of Macaulay digging and Pine Siskin seem to usually have higher frequency qualities in their various flight calls. To my ear they tend to have a certain "frantic" quality about them that I'm not getting here. For Lesser Goldfinch, I feel like when I normally hear them imitating other birds' calls it's usually in quick succession with a myriad of other calls included as they whip around through their repertoire. Their flight calls seem to be consistent with the qualities of a quick and thin metallic scratchiness, that of which I'm also not getting here. House Finch could also be a possibility. I am not sure I have heard one so consistently rhythmic before and usually involve some more higher pitch to their flight calls. On top of all of that, the tone for this bird seemed to be a little more husky than what most of the above possible birds present in call notes. Ultimately finding out that this is consistent with their "chit-chit" vocalization. My bird seems to sound a little languid, less frantic than the other species previously mentioned and without more of their higher pitched quirks. One thing to note is that the second chit in my recording seems to descend in pitch slightly from the first chit, but not sure if that changes anything. It was hard to compare spectrograms because of the distance and surrounding industrial noise, but at least by ear I'm still feeling good that this was a CORE. I just want to be aware of any "gotchas". In the end, my recording sounds very much like Audrey's recording from Whitaker last year: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/403858411 My recording seems to also have consistent qualities with the following recordings: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/610719104 https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/610631870
