Observation details
Heard the very familiar honking call, either of Slaty-legged Crake or Rufous Treepie, from a distance while sitting in LH3 around 5pm in the evening. Got a recording from the classroom window and tried walking around the building to try to find where it was calling from, but couldn't narrow it down to any patch before it stopped calling. Based on the places I could & couldn't hear it from, I'm guessing it may have been calling in the patch just behind the NCBS boundary wall in GKVK, somewhere behind the vehicle parking area, but can't be sure. Called for about 10-15min at varying pace and sporadic silences in between before it stopped calling completely. Munish and I have been hearing this call in random places around Bangalore in the past few years, but usually always in the late evenings or around sunset hours in wooded areas. Sky was overcast and quite dark at 5pm today when I heard it. Have tried finding a match for this call with other commoner species (including frogs), but nothing else sounds like this. Strange species!
