Observation details
among a group of L Scaup and Bufflehead. Chunky diving duck about the size of scaup. Dark brown overall, with lighter underside visible when flapping. No wing markings. Tail had ‘spiky’ end and was held above water. Roundish head with dark, not large bill. Conspicuous combination of dark cap (darker than back) and whitish cheeks. There was a faint vertical stripe running through the cheek. Was preening and then diving. Nearby female Ruddy Duck with similar head pattern was much smaller, and had horizontal stripe through cheek.
