Observation details
With the male I saw in flight, there may have been 3 Harlequins at this location. I first saw a male in flight at 12:10 while standing on the Rotary Deck overlooking Manistee Harbor. I did not see any other ducks around the harbor at this time. About 35 minutes after I recorded the male in flight on Discord, Brian Allen found a pair of Harlequins at the end of First st. pier. I returned to town to photograph them, watching the pair for over an hour actively diving and foraging close to the rocks. Descriptions: Male in flight: small, dark duck, flying low over the water, potbellied, long tail, close enough to see white at base of bill and white bars on chest. Male on the water: a stunning, colorful diving duck; dark blue body (often appearing black in certain light,) white spots on face and white bars on chest, chestnut/rust colored flanks and rust colored crown stripe, fairly long, wedge-shaped tail. Female: overall dark brown with white spots on face, small bill. Photographs.
