Observation details
JPR comments: Juvenile. Very rare in far-eastern Ontario—to the point of being considered a Vagrant. Gracile, compact, dark brown loon. Puffy nape, low crown, slender and short bill. Nape slightly paler brown compared to richer brown of upperparts. Clean/straight line of brown-white delineation between hind and fore neck; collar “kink” not present, as in COLO. Narrow “chinstrap” readily visible in scope, as the bird glanced about. Aged by uniformly scaled appearance, with pale edging to entire upperside. An exquisite bird, especially when first viewed closer to shore (approx 200-250 meters from shoreline, before it began to slowly swim offshore). Low quality digi-scope photos included in this checklist (they were the best I could manage).
