Observation details
Experts called this a Pomerine based on bulk and flight style. Ultimately called this a Parasitic primarily due to it known to be at location. It was the size of a Ring-billed Gull, dwarfing the Bonaparte’s it was seen harassing. It flew more like a gull than a falcon over the water, but did move with purpose a few times in pursuit. Heavily barred underwing and warm brown in color on the belly, with a very obvious white patch on both the upper and under wing appear to me to validate the ID, though I have no real experience telling one Jeager from another. It is possible that a 2nd Jeager was present and if so it’s possible my pictures/video show both. After the initial observation and pictures, the bird continued north and out of sight, and so my attention was elsewhere. But approximately 30 seconds later, a jeager was coming back from the north, seemingly faster than would be expected if the original sighting made the circle, though I never did see two jeagers at once. Pretty cool to see one attempt to parasitize a Bonapartes with the backdrop of the Flint Hills.
