Observation details
**Rare. Stakeout 1st-winter found two days ago, still foraging just off the beach. Chunky phalarope with comparatively heavy body, heavy breast, and thick neck, creating a "bull-chested" appearance. Slightly thicker and shorter bill than Red-necked. Subtly paler base to bill, difficult to see in this light. Long undertail coverts, seemed to almost prop up the tail as the bird swam. Wings shorter than tail tip. Pale gray upperparts with crisp fine edges to scapulars. Blackish back of crown and ear-coverts with broad white supercilium and forecrown extending to midcrown. Small black spot on the forehead. A beautiful suffusion of pale orange-salmon on neck and uppermost breast. Tertials, upperwing coverts, and flight feathers blackish. Tertials boldly edged white. Bold white wing stripe. Flight distinctive with very quick downstrokes and much slower upstrokes with slight pause before downstrokes. Never called. Flew off at 5:50 heading northeast.
