Observation details
Fantastic! The only loon on the reservoir, near the west end, offering outstanding and extended views. Immature plumage. Large, heavy-billed loon, overall similar to Common Loon but much paler. Very pale gray neck and head and whitish throat, lacking contrast or patterning on the sides of the neck. Bill almost entirely pale ivory-colored with a small amount of dark on the very base of the top surface of the culmen. Back pale gray with beautiful silvery-white edging on coverts. Different head shape than Common, with taller ‘forehead.’ Combination of flat upper culmen and head posture made the bill appear slightly upturned. Jonathan took lots of photos.
