Media notes
Perhaps the best captured "chip chip phillip" song may be at the 2 s to 3 s portion of the recording immediately after the initial static noise associated with turning on the recording device.
Observation details
Vireo call came from the wooded forest edge of Jack's Creek on Alligator Alley at Pool 3. We debated BWVI call versus Red-eyed Vireo call that was somehow "off." Then the bird responded to BWVI recorded call and flew overhead and perched in trees allowing binocular views and photos. From binocular view, bird showed to clearly be a vireo, long pointy bill showing smooth transition from head through to bill tip, black whiskers (malar stripes) down lateral throat, yellow vent, notched tail, eye line, unmarked dorsal body and wing. First thought to sound like a slightly off REVI but kept making the "chip chip Phillip" call. See audio recording and photos. Notes continued by Irvin Pitts - we first heard the bird sing at about 2:50 PM from dense, maritime forest habitat bordering a freshwater/brackish marsh. It was immediately recognized as sounding different, both in tone and phrases, and I played Black-whiskered Vireo song for comparison, which we thought sounded very similar. This species came to mind, I having seen and heard Black-whiskered Vireo before in south Florida. A couple of times the bird sang a different pattern of phrases, which made us wonder if we were actually listening to an odd sounding red-eyed vireo, but it kept reverting back to the more typical-sounding Black-whiskered song. We spotted a vireo-like bird fly out from that stand of trees and land in a nearby clump of pines and popcorn trees. We thought this may have been the bird, acting in response to the audio clip so I walked over to those trees and played the audio clip again and the bird flew down in response. At that point we got good observations and photos, under mostly shady conditions. The black "whiskers" appeared very prominent. The eye-line stripe looked dirty white, or slightly yellowish in color. The bill was very prominent looking, being long and giving the face an attenuated look. The back was olive/brown, the underparts appeared mostly white, merging to light yellow in the vent area and it had a dull gray cap.
