Observation details
Little late, but not by much; Immature Black-Crowned Night Heron; Was sitting on a log at the waters edge on the western end of Brick Pond, but closer to the rail road tracks. Could be seen fishing from the log. Medium sized, compact heron. I got a good view with my scope. Body was light brown overall with large white spots on the wings. Upper bill was dark and lower bill was yellow. These forms of identification ruled out Yellow-Crowned Night Heron and made this a positive ID for Black-Crowned Night Heron. The legs were a yellowish-green color. This bird was first brought to my attention by a photographer, Bill Baburchak while my wife and I were doing a daily count. The photos that are are part of the report were provided by Bill Baburchak of Long Creek Photography.
