Observation details
About here: 35.35175° N, 103.44668° W. I think this is likely an imm./HY bird (or possibly Female). A bit larger than coots. Black cap extending down nape. Pale face, almost buffy colored. Rest of body very dark brown to almost black. Scoter type bill, sloped in contour with head. Lost track of this bird as I was trying to get around the vegetation to get a cleaner photo. Later saw a bird that was the right shape, size fly from further back against cattails/bull rush in this more marshy type area. That bird had a dark collar more or less, with an oval shaped white/pale patch on belly that was only visible in this flight. This would fit with an immature bird.
