Observation details
As soon as we had gotten out of the truck looking for the swamp sparrow, we had started walking through the gate that led to the ponds south of the parking lot, we heard a strange, raspy jay like call. I was immediately intrigued by this call, knowing it unusual, thinking it was some sort of jay. I started walking towards it, where it was coming from a grove of trees that acted as a wall to the north of the parking lot. As I reached the first set of trees before said wall, I attempted recordings with Merlin, which didn't identify the call. When I was getting ready to move past the trees, a flicker flew into some trees from where the jay was calling, with me thinking it was him, I bolted out to get my camera on the flicker, only to discover that it was not the jay, who stopped calling. Disappointed, I started walking back, when the jay started calling again, this time I got it confirmed on Merlin. After trying to get closer again and the jay going quiet again, we backed out again and the jay called, this time becoming visible at the tops of the trees. He then flew to our right to some other trees, where we got some poor quality pictures of him. As I looked down at my camera looking at the pictures, he had since flown again and was not heard again. The call that we heard which I got recorded was a raspy *jay jay* call that was unmistakable, I got three or four different recordings of him doing that call, as well as a set of poor quality pictures of him at the top of the trees.
