Observation details
Second island record. First detected by MLB, giving rattle calls as it was in flight with a flock of Pipits near the helipad. The flock then flew over towards Sea Pigeon Pt., where MLB was able to relocate it on the ground. After about five minutes, JRT and NDB arrived on the scene with scope and cameras, and the three of us had good views as it worked its way across the terrace with the Pipits. After about ten minutes, it flew towards the lighthouse, and was not seen again. In flight, the dry rattle, lacking the “tew” calls of Lapland Longspur was distinctive. On the ground, this bird was notably orange-buff. There was fine streaking across the chest. The bill appeared longer and finer than that of a Lapland Longspur. The back was well scalloped, while there was a complete whitish eye ring. Behaviorally, the bird strongly resembled a pipit as it worked across the barren ground of Sea Pigeon Point, lacking the jerky motions of a Lapland Longspur. The tertials lacked the broad rufous edging of a Lapland. In flight, 2-3 of the outer rectricies were white, compared to the lesser amount of white in Lapland Longspur.
