Media notes
Type 1 flight calls and trills recorded in windy conditions.
Observation details
Calling from high in Jeffrey pines. Audio recordings. No photos. Two seen in flight while calling from directly below: large, yellow finches with conspicuous white wing patches that contrasted with black on the rest of the wing. A couple were also seen distantly while moving around in the treetops. They would vocalize from multiple directions for a few minutes and then go silent for several minutes before resuming. 10 is a rough estimate and is probably an undercount given the number of locations where they were calling. The flight calls are classic type 1s: many have a small upward component at the start followed by a large, rapidly downward-sweeping part that makes the call sound piercing. There are also trills and some other vocalizations.
