size, shape, and color comparison of Pacific Golden-Plover (left) with juv Black-bellied Plover (right)
Observation details
juv among BBPLs at high tide shorebird roost; rather aggressive individual, chasing other waders, including some a lot bigger than it is; during those bouts it lifted its wings, showing all-dark underwings and a rump color contiguous with back color. Much buff around the head/neck, still faded 'golden spangles' on back; primary projection rather short. Give several mellow, piping calls, decidedly higher in pitch than BBPL. This plover kept shaking its right foot, then would stand on the left foot only, but was often on both feet. The shaking of one foot is something the Bar-tailed Godwit did at Asilomar a month or so ago. It looked like it was worried it might be stepping on hot lava! But as a juv, it would not yet have experienced that. So, just odd. Photos.
