Observation details
Continuing with other shorebirds. Almost to Ivy Log Gap Road for an Oconee Rivers Audubon Society mountain field trip in Union County, Mark McShane and Nick Sakas turned around and successfully chased an inland Georgia RUFF found by Jim Flynn (The Mighty Flynn) earlier in the morning at the American Proteins Ponds in Forsyth County. - - - Breeding plumaged female (Reeve) larger than Lesser Yellowlegs, no hint of even an abbreviated neck ruff as could be in a male at this time of year. Very slightly drooping bill shorter than yellowlegs bill, long neck, smallish head, body plump, long legs, Quite Elegant! In flight underwings white, with distinctive U-ish to V-shaped white band or patch on rump. Greenish-yellow legs, very black-blotchy splotchy throat, neck, breast, and forward upper flanks. Floppy tertials, and scapulars (back or mantle feathers) sticking up most of the time. Some tertials showed barring. Amazing 3rd Georgia RUFF this year! - - - (as others were actively photographing the bird onsite during this session I also could not resist, but posted these photos 7 years after the session, long after the site was closed)
