Observation details
Young male. I decided that this is not a hybrid since the black-headed look is common in young male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in the east. Key for me is that the underwings (wing linings) are bright rosy-red, not orange or orange-toned. Similarly the new red feathers on the breast are also strongly red, not orange-toned. The black coverts make it a young male, given that they contrast with duller flight feathers. I had expert opinion from Peter Burke (Ontario, Canada) who said this look is pretty common in fall young males out east. Without any strong evidence of a hybrid, I am going with young male Rose-breasted.
