Observation details
heard unfamiliar call and suspected possible Pacific/Winter Wren; began recording and then visually confirmed that it was such a wren. As I listened to my recording (https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/610354799), the bird began calling again, mostly in single notes (https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/610354805), with a typical WIWR joining in in the background. Visually, this small dark wren was similar to familiar Winter Wren but smoother and less patterned, with less contrast between the upperparts, throat, and breast. The flanks seemed relatively finely streaked (less coarse than I expect in WIWR, but I have not studied one closely in a while). The bird was not particularly richly colored.
