Observation details
Very tame hanging out near but not associating with domestic geese and Canada Geese. First found by Jon Feenstra near Lancaster 6 March 2023 and remaining in the area at Apollo Park through 8 July 2023 where it became quite tame. Dan Singer and I looked unsuccessfully for it on 10 July but it showed up here in Willowbrook on 13 July 2023 remaining through the current period. I understand analysis of plumage and bill pattern confirmed it was the same bird. It is presumably the larger, longer billed nominate "A. s. serrirostris" which breeds in the Russian Far East. If accepted this would be the 6th record for California. There are also two previous records accepted as Taiga/Tundra Bean-Goose of which I saw one at the South end of the Salton Sea 27 November 2010. In the opinion of Mariko Parslow and others it was a Taiga Bean-Goose: https://fog.ccsf.edu/~jmorlan/bego112710d.htm but the CBRC failed to endorse it as such.
