Observation details
Heard and saw. However, only saw the head and upper neck. Seemed to be a typical Gulf Coast Clapper Rail. The orange didn't see to be bright enough for King Rail and there seemed to be too much gray for Clapper Rail. When I heard the bird call I thought it was a Clapper Rail. I was able to get a recording using Merlin which is attached. The call came up as Clapper Rail in Merlin. Either we both are incorrect which is very possible or the bird was a Clapper Rail. The bird was towards the end of the boardwalk and on the right side of the boardwalk as you are walking towards Oso Bay. Presumably, this area is more saline than is the area to the left side of the boardwalk that is close to the freshwater outflow from the sewage treatment plant. If you listen to the recording and think it is a King Rail please let me know. I have very little experience with calls of King Rail and am not certain that I can distinguish between King and Clapper Rail calls in the field.
