Observation details
Rufous overall with finely barred back and wing coverts. Weak stripe below the eye, dark wingtips, and rectrices barred with a broad black terminal band. Did not notice it perched on a lamp post until I flushed it off onto a nearby branch, where it watched me watch it. Originally thought it was the Hobby I'd seen earlier, having not seen its upperparts and as this bird had its back to me. When I think of Kestrels, I think of thrush-sized falcons. Good thing for cameras and field guides!
