Observation details
Seen from South Shore of Lake Crabtree. However, good sightings could also be had from the main visitor center on the North Shore. Viewed at long range. Took ID Photos and uploaded one. Tight compact flock. At first, I thought it was a flock of American Coot due to the tightness of the flock. From a distance, they appeared to be much larger than nearby Pied Billed Grebe. Also their outline appeared to be a more elegant and elongated profile rather than the compact and round Ruddy Duck profile. I made out 6 (but possibly 7) Looked like an all-Female flock. Overall brown with a good amount of light mottling on the back and sides. Some had a raised tail like a Ruddy, but at a less peaky 45 degree angle. Head / crown black / dark capped running from top of bill to back of head and down the beck along the nape. Cheek washed out dirty whitish from a distance. Ran down neck sides to body and also front of neck (possibly throat as well, but not clearly seen) Bill appeared a lot less stout than the White-winged scoter seen here last year. Appeared to be a lighter in color - gray / bluish gray / not black. Also noted a dark vertical line at the base of the bill.
