Observation details
Whoa!! Came in to pygmy-owl whistles around (37.32577, -122.38639) on the Stage Rd. bridge over San Gregorio Creek; initially seen for less than a second but refound and photographed after about an hour. County bird! (I didn’t bother to chase the HMB WTP bird last year until it was a day too late.) Stocky vireo with bold dark transocular extending clearly onto lores and dark grayish cap with well-defined lateral borders contributing to sharply contrasting facial pattern, rich yellow below brightest on throat and at top of chest, relatively short bill, and small- and round-headed appearance. Many or all of these points are visible in photos; note especially the distribution of yellow in the first photo and head shape/facial pattern in the second. Views were substantially better than the photos indicate.
