Media notes
Crossing the trail to settle down near the river. Paparazzi in full effect.
Observation details
***mega - second state record, just under a year after the first and part of a massive range expansion event for the species. Refound today by M. Cain and later J. Collison, the first sighting since the initial find by B. Borrelli. First spotted in our party by DRB, feeding nonstop on earthworms in the leaf litter of knotweedy clearing at approx (42.0738055, -76.8438952), then crossing the path toward the river to preen and seemingly settle down for the evening. Weird heron-like bird with thick, somewhat decurved bill, attenuated body, upright posture. Brown overall with white speckles on upperparts, getting more dense up the breast/neck to a mostly pale-gray head with some dark flecks. Bill yellow with a dark tip. Gray legs. Seemed in good health, eating vigorously and not showing any signs of sickness. Unhinged experience to see a Limpkin skulking through the knotweed along the Chemung River, and an even less hinged way to cap off Brant Day. Awesome. Many photos, videos by EMR.
