Observation details
Not 100% certain of the ID to be honest. Small buteo with "delicate" appearance. Fairly heavy streaking around neck but limited, sparse spotting on breast, larger spotting/streaking on flanks, lacking red-tailed hawk's dark "breast band" of dense dark spots or immature gray hawk's much stronger streaked/spotted (broader and darker color) breast. Spotting was rufous-brown rather than dark color. Variable white feathering on back (is it too much for Broad-winged Hawk?). Pale throat with darker feathering in middle, suggestive of Broad-winged but maybe a little weak facial markings vs what is typical. Didn't get a view of its tail due to nearby brush, and once the bird flew it didn't soar but rather disappeared deeper into the trees so didn't see the bird in flight.
