Observation details
We heard an approaching bird making a simple trill call note, but caught only a brief view of it through the trees. It landed in a tall spruce next to the Superintendent's Residence, out of sight, and continued to call for about 40 seconds before flying away while still calling. Our final (and distant) view was of a bird about the size of a robin. It flew with an undulating flight pattern. Merlin Sound ID was on during this time but it failed to recognize the call, possibly due to the louder calls of overhead Canada Geese and the sounds from work crews. In the attached sound file the bird made 7 calls while perched in the tree, and the last while flying away. Based on the calls, flight pattern and size this appears to be an Evening Grosbeak.
