Observation details
Photos DR writes: "Bill Hill discovered this very cooperative male along a line of blooming Salvia which borders the west edge of the public parking lot. He telephoned Rita before rushing off to his home to get his camera, but was already taking photos when we arrived. The very active bird perched often on a wire fence extending above the flowers, in good light. It was a smaller hummer than the many ANHU, but aggressive and pugnacious, chasing and interacting with various Anna's. It foraged quickly and rapidly on the blooms, sometimes giving a rapid 'je-dit' call, sometimes run together, that recalled Ruby-crowned Kinglet, but softer. It appears to be a male in preformative molt. Perhaps because the flowers are near many customers, the hummingbirds seem oblivious to us and therefore felt 'tame,' often landing right next to use.".
