Observation details
I noted a small flock about 5-10 White-crowns, adults and juveniles, in the backyard and in the adjacent wash. Some were singing and calling, and a few came into the water feature in the yard. I heard a Gambel’s White-crowned-like “pink” call, and noted a dark-lored adult giving the call. I typically hear the flatter “pink” calls given by the oriantha dark-lored White-crowns, and the sharper call of this bird seemed odd. I tried playback of leucophrys calls and the dark-lored adult responded immediately with the same sharp “pink” calls (recordings). I did not hear the bird sing, but it responded to leucophrys song playback by frequently calling. Notable markings were the bold black and white head stripes, dark lores, grayish breast and brownish flanks. The bill seemed pinkish but not as bright pink or as heavy as oriantha. I don’t have much experience with leucophrys calls, so any corrections appreciated, but the calls sounded sharp like Gambel’s compared to the flatter oriantha calls.
