Observation details
Photos. An unexpected surprise. A small, compact, large headed empid that would frequently flick wings after landing. Grayish brown upperparts, bold eye ring, widest in front and back of eye; wing bars and tertials edged buffy white; underparts a dirty white; tail pinched in at base; tips of rectrices emarginated; noticeable short primary extension; soft "whit" calls. I spent over an hour trying to get better photos to be sure I eliminated the possibility of a western empid. Bird was in shrubbery surrounding the only pool of the "waterfall" just NE of the cross-over board walk that had live (green cattails). Bird continually changed positions and often perched in thick underbrush. It would sally out and then land (often in a different perch) a few meters from the original location making photographing the bird an extreme challenge. By being patient and standing in perfect light for extended periods of time, I was finally able to get the diagnostic photo that I needed for documentation. Responsive to limited play back of calls to help confirm identification. This is the latest fall date I have ever observed this species in MO. Any MO empid at this date should be examined very thoroughly.
