Observation details
Live/healthy bird found by Riley Lawson during OSU bird-window collision surveys and the rest of us came to relocate and document it. Flushed repeatedly from near Ag Hall and seen sitting and in flight before we let it be (it kept flying near big windows known to kill many birds at both Ag Hall and at the FAPC building north across Farm Rd). If confirmed this would be the first Payne County record to our knowledge. Seen sitting and in flight by all. In flight appeared to have diagnostic poorwill tail pattern with white outer retrices and narrower white on inner tail (unlike reverse expected pattern in adult Whip-poor-will - juvie whip also doesn't match as they have buffier tail tips). Difficult to judge size and proportions in field with many brief views but in some views appeared shorter tailed, shorter winged, and with more rufous throughout underwing then expected for whip. Sitting views were less helpful because it always kept its tail pointed away so we couldn't easily see tail projection (Landon Neumann saw this better later and noted very short tail projection). Some sitting pics taken from inside Ag Hall of bird on a ledge and flight shots taken from exterior (best flight shots are by Lucas Bobay) - some flight shots also suggest front/head heavy shape and shorter tail as does the clearest sitting shot Other details were difficult to view in field but pictures seem to at least not overrule Poorwill.
