Observation details
From the beach, I saw this jumpy flock of 6 gulls that looked too buoyant and tern-like for ring-bills (which are the usual here). They were also sticking close together as they’d pick up, circle, and put back down on the water. After I drove to the playing fields side of the lake, I was able to get good enough scope views for id. Ear spots, black tips to tails. Bills not big enough for LAGU and wing tips not dark enough. By the time the sun hit the tops of the trees, they were gone. Good enough digiscopes (in predawn light) for id. Reviewing photos, I can see at least one of the birds has the black “M” on the back of an immature BOGU.
