Observation details
Poor but discernible audio to come. Had to search for well over an hour before I began to hear vocalizations, a mix of calls and snippets of half-hearted song. Initially a pair seen high overhead calling, that disappeared to the southeast. A short while later, another bird much closer, calling as it flew around. Not well seen, but short tail and white outer tail apparent. Calls are tricky, and as this was my first experience with SPPI I learned that calls can be deceptively similar to some HOLA flight calls (or vice versa). But somewhat more emphatic upslurs given as a mix of singlets and doublets sets it apart. Upon reflection, the doublets are reminiscent of AMPI "pip-pit" notes, just in a different style. Personally I don't hear the "squeaky toy" that others describe it as, but maybe that's just me.
