Observation details
Adult found earlier this afternoon by Debbie House. Located in Beaver Cove just west of the marina. Extensively photographed on a floating tire boom. It flew out into the middle of the lake and we could not relocate it for about 20 minutes. Later it returned and landed in the water in front of the boat docks, between the boat docks and the shore. We had good views of it bathing, and it really got into it. Then it flew to the long walkway that leads from the shore out to the boats and preened. When we were leaving, it had fallen asleep. Adult bird with uniform, relatively dark gray back, yellowish green bill, which appeared rather hooked at the tip with no markings whatsoever. The most prominent feature on the face was a dark gray smudge behind the eye. When it was standing on the boom, we could clearly see that the legs and feet were black. On the folded wing, the black wing tips only had white apical spots on the innermost visible primaries. There was a rather large white tertial crescent. We are working on determining the age (probably a third cycle bird) and sub species of this bird. One field mark of particular note was the outer web of P 10 was black halfway from the tip inward. In flight, we noted the silvery outer wing compared with the darker inner wing and back. Chris’s first for the Eastern Sierra and Jon says perhaps the first adult he’s seen in October in the interior (early).
