Observation details
Seen in the large burn pile on the north side of Frankenheimer Road and about 2.5 miles east of 28 Mile Road. This rather plain, light-colored sparrow was distinguished by its small size relative to the White-crowned Sparrows it was with; tan-colored crown and nape with much fine, black streaking; brown auricular with dark border surrounded by whitish supercilium above, whitish moustachial stripe below, and whitish color behind as well. The throat was white, with a thin, blackish malar stripe on either side. The underparts were creamy white with a faint buffy wash to the breast and sides. The back was light brown with dark streaks, the rump solid light brown. The short, conical bill and the legs were pinkish, and it had a narrow white eye ring. The wings were brown with a single faint, tan-colored wing bar on each wing. Brewer's Sparrow is a rare, but regular, spring migrant through Stanislaus County, with most records from April and early May. There are only a very few fall records in Stanislaus County to date and only one record for the winter season.
