Observation details
Absolutely delighted to find after following up Brandy Johnson's report from yesterday evening. Distant but decent scope views at first from the Airport Perimeter Rd side. Having recently moved to Fairbanks and this being my first visit to the airport area, I didn't realize the other side of the pond was accessible until a truck drove by and a man stopped to let his dog run around for a bit. The dog spooked the Phalarope to the middle of the pond but it returned to the east end when they left. After I drove to the other side I was treated to such a nice time with this bird. I sat on the edge of the pond for 30 minutes while it foraged on the waters surface, swimming within 10-15 ft from me at times. Appears to be a molting juvenile bird with gray giving away to dark on top, faded buffy/peach wash on neck and dark eye mask. Thicker bill compared to RNPH.
