Observation details

Note that this is a private yard. Do not attempt to view the bird without contacting me. When I stepped out to my patio, I immediately heard a different HB call. The "typewriter" call of a BBHU. I was able to keep the kids and dog inside while I got audio and photos. (I believe I heard and saw the bird yesterday but was unable to chase it down at the time and then it got dark). The bird was roughly the size of nearby Anna's Hummingbirds but with a conspicuous blue rump and tail. It was frequenting the flowers bank and not the feeders and would perch low or perch on the telephone line. The bill was brilliant red/orange at the proximal third and the bird had a green head and back. There was a dusky auricular patch behind a largish black eye and a white postocular spot/stripe. Also of note was a white malar stripe. The throat was brilliant teal and the stomach was splotchy white and electric green. In the audio file, the BBHU's typewriter call is much softer than the loud Anna's chip notes.
