1st bird seen
Observation details
**Rare in Pinal County, but maybe more regular than reported. At least two light morph immatures. We had three sightings, all three of which involved birds flying downstream, but we felt that two was a conservative count. First sighting was around 9:15, a high bird that quickly gained altitude with a Cooper's and disappeared. A brief, probable sighting shortly afterwards could have been the same bird. Second individual was at 10:15 or later, much farther upstream. This one was very low with a Red-tailed Hawk right at the lip of the canyon. We enjoyed a few close circles before it zipped downstream. Tim got photos of both individuals, confirming the features we saw real-time. Small, compact buteos with classic Broad-winged Hawk shape (stocky body, fairly short tail, wings broad at base with graceful "candle flame" tapering at tips). The wingtips were black, and the underwings lacked the patagial marks of Redtail. The tail had several faint dusky bands, with a classic thicker dark terminal band. Both birds were fairly lightly marked below, without the organized belly-band of RTHA or the bold marks of immature Gray Hawk.
