Courtship behaviour
Observation details
Noticed several groups, a group of 5 was noisier than usual. Then noticed a pair moving synchronously. The courtship dance was simple but highly synchronized. Pair moves in parallel few steps, then both 'dip heads down with tail in the air' as if to forage, then both lift their heads and change direction and again move parallel few steps to repeat the same 'dip head down' action. This continued for several minutes, while the remaining lapwings surrounded the couple as if they are cheering this 'Spanish tango' duet. Pair moved a bit away from the the group performing the same 'move parallel and dip down' dance until they were distant and private, after which the female crouched to the ground wings folded, and the pair mated. they mated several times where the female rose up and walked a few steps forward and crouched again, after which the male followed.
