Observation details
First county record for Type 2 and third county record for the species, following the first in 2018 by Jen Brumfield and my brief sighting in March of 2019 in this same spot! My entire reason for coming down here was to search for RECR on the off chance they had returned to the area since there are some birds in the Hocking Hills area and I couldn’t believe my luck. First heard what sounded like 2 birds from the parking lot at the Campground Office building and they sounded very close; almost overhead, but I couldn’t get a visual to save my life. Once I got some audio I was happy with I started walking back towards the nature center where I heard them a couple more times before it went quiet. I continued walking back down the entrance road until I reached the gravel parking area and saw a couple of pines so I decided to give that area a try. I never saw the birds perched, but they made a pass over the treetops and I was able to see at least five birds with the typical bouncy finch flight style flying down the slope towards the furnace area below and was able to get a recording of all the birds vocalizing. Efforts to relocate after that were unsuccessful, but with how many pines are in the area I’m not surprised. I attempted the Archery Trail which was the area where they spent weeks after JB found them back in 2018 and came up empty.
